About David Wolfheart
David Wolfheart, is a devotee of the Asatru religion for many years. He is founder, president and Goði (priest) of the religious organization recognized by the state Alfrothul Folkish Asatru. Previously he founded the Cultural Association “Old Northern Tradition Alfrothul”. David spent a lot of years organizing events in Asatru with Alfrothul assiduously, and working to organize acts of Alfrothul, in his area. It is certainly one of the first and biggest precursors divulging the Folkish and native vision of Asatru in our country, which in the early years, was not easy. He had broken the taboo of talking about the Folkish vision and seeing that his work has served to make many people think deeply, you can see that through the efforts and perseverance over several years, people start sharing Folkish vision in our country.
Now he has recently published an Asatru book, the latter publication is now on sale in many reference libraries. The book “Asatru. The call of the gods of the north”, is the first book in spanish, speaking about Asatru and its practice ,and is a guide with blots and rituals. He has also written books of internal character in his group, related to the practice of Asatru rituals. He has written several articles about Asatru, on his personal blog, also on the website of Alfrothul and in some social networks to publicize religion and tradition to anyone who wants to come, and feels curious to Asatru, an european native religion.
We leave you with the interview to David Wolfheart
To begin, can you explain what is Asatru?
Asatru is the name we give to faith, religion and ancient tradition of the peoples of central and northern Europe since pre-Christian times. A native religion and spirituality of these European people. The word Asatru literally means faithful or loyal to the gods. This Asatru religion or faith is officially recognized in several countries such as Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Spain. Asatru is a reflection of the spirituality of the European soul, it connects us with the sacred powers, and helps us to evolve following the path of our gods and our ancestors. We are connected to our gods and goddesses, the sacred powers and our ancestors. Our ancestral connection goes beyond time and space. We follow the path of our ancestors, because certainly we are part of them.
What is the Folkish Asatru vision?
The Folkish vision is what gives sense to the native view of Asatru. This is because, without a doubt, Asatru is the spiritual expression that our European ancestors had, and reflects the European soul. The connection to the sacred powers and our ancestors, is something that our ancestors did and practiced for centuries. We follow this path just adapting it to the XXI century, but without losing the essence and ancestral identity. If you look through many things such as culture, art, festivities, symbolism, or archetypes, our religion and spirituality come from the collective unconsciousness of the European peoples, is in its DNA, in its experience, in its way of life and how to interpret the divine. The ancestral way is innate in our religion, because we are continuing our ancestors, this goes beyond life and death and what our five senses perceive. We feel the connection with our ancestors and bond with them, to move on, we realize they are our spiritual food. Asatru connects us with our ancestors and with the divine.
The deep love to our culture and our religion, helps us to understand, appreciate and respect more others’ cultures and religions. For all this, we believe that we have to appreciate and respect different cultures, native religions and beliefs of each people around the world that form the great human mosaic. We are respectful because we do not believe in making an uniform world, with one culture, and one view of things, such as globalization, monotheistic religions and elites try to. That’s why, now, in these confusing times, it is more important to connect with who we are.
The world has many native cultural and spiritual expressions, we defend those differences, which are the strength and identity of each people in the earth. In a globalized world, now more than ever,we try that powerful elites and world religions do not impose the unique thought. This defense of our native identity has never been so difficult in our history, that’s why we have this heroic part in doing so.
We do not say to anyone what he has or should do to follow the spiritual path, but we interpret and follow the path of our ancestors to connect with ourselves and go home.
How is the practice of Asatru in everyday life?
In our day, we affirm our connection to the sacred powers, and we do it making offerings and libations to our gods and ancestors. We do it remembering that life we have, and do it with joy and enthusiasm, because we see life as good and as an opportunity in our evolution. We have our daily connection with our gods and our ancestors, with our simple rituals and rites of passage. Also, obviously, in the celebration of our sacred religion we share these moments with our people and our folk, we rooted a great sense of family and community.
How do you see Asatru and Alfrothul today and in the future?
I think the Asatru has to continue with its natural evolution to give spiritual answers in the XXI century. That’s why I realized that the Alfrothul was my path.
Asatru is an ancient religion and, as such, we follow the path of our ancestors, but we do it evolving Asatru to our present age. We practice Asatru following the path of the people who gave rise to it, but with the evolution and modernization required in the XXI century. This is done with common sense. We do it listening to our our inside, which takes us to our roots, this makes us see the path that our ancestors walked, feeds us of its spirit, take the relief and continue to evolve its like they did. We do this with full respect and balance, taking the essence of timeless values as our nine noble virtues, and providing the knowledge of today, without losing the essence and identity of our European native spiritual soul. We could say, we practice the religion of our ancestors, without having to live exactly as they did, knowing that every age has its peculiarities and spiritual needs.
Do you think that Norse mythology can provide us spiritual answers in the XXI century?
Of course. There are questions and spiritual needs are the same today that hundreds of years ago. Asatru has as most direct sources Norse / Germanic mythology, the Edda and the sagas. Our gods and goddesses are references to us, we learn from their stories that transmit us values, values that are beyond time. Our myths and our sagas inspire us to be brave, to be worthy and overcome problems with a strong and cheerful spirit. In them we see the reflection of our European soul, as the myths reflect the collective unconscious of our people.
Our mythology is the basis of our spiritual vision and gives us the answers we need.
Asatru invites us to connect with our ancestors and our gods and also with what we are. Our myths and gods help us to walk that path to bring us to a noble life in harmony with our environment and ourselves, to maintain our values and a cheerful spirit. By practicing Asatru in the modern world, we learn to relate to the sacred powers, to bring the strength of these powers to the world through our sacred rituals. That’s why we do not live anchored in the past, but on the contrary, we promote our values in the present life, and reaffirm the freedom of our ancestral beliefs.
Recently, you wrote the first book in Spanish of Asatru entitled Asatru – The call of the gods of the north. Can you explain a little bit what is about and what can we find in your book? Where is it available?
The book is available in several physical sites and online bookstores. The best known are La casa del Libro, Fnac, Amazon or El Corte Ingles that are available on their web pages of online sales.
The book “Asatru, the call of the gods of the North” takes us to the practice of religion Asatru. In this book, readers will find how to practice our religion in the modern days. In it, I discuss and analyze the basics notions of Asatru. The book also addresses where comes Asatru from, their sources, their beliefs, their traditions, their festivities, and its main sources.
This was a necessary book, because as you say, there was no book in our language, so that people could have a base or knowledge of how to practice Asatru and to celebrate their festivals. The book explains step by step how to perform rituals and celebrations, highlighting the most important celebrations of Asatru. I think it is certainly a tool that was necessary because there was a void about it.
Do you think there’s a good image and knowledge of the people who doesn’t know Asatru?
In the Alfrothul, we are to inform, support, and help more and more people for the normalization of our religion in a more natural way, and to see us as a spiritual dawn based on our ancestral heritage.
For us is very important to show the vision Folkish seriously, adapted to our times and offering a positive, friendly and cheerful face of our organization.
Our folkish practice of Asatru, is far from controversial, partisanship, egos, and people with new age fashions. Neither do we share space with eclectic people, political movements or those who preach hatred. We respect that each person or group choose their way, different to ours, but all these people already know that our way is not theirs.
Our values are Faith, Family and Tradition. We are an organization where lies in the fellowship, the spirit of community and family. In the Alfrothul, we like to be a dynamic organization that provides naturalness, common sense, information, and answers for the youth and old age of our time, and we like to celebrate with our families and our folk our festivities.
How do you see the present and future of the Alfrothul and Asatru?
Asatru is becoming more standardized and is reaching to more people. The call of the ancestors and the way home are awakening in many Europeans. In Spain we see the example with several groups like us, legalized and presenting their own projects. They are getting many rights and many things both here and around the world.
We in Alfrothul, have presented collaborative projects with our members for their life and personal development, we have support projects for people that is beggining, so they can form their kindreds with its own personality and its own growth based on their effort , learning and dedication. We have launched the Asatru Military Program, in which, apart from the activities, we are negotiating for the religious rights of the military with the government. We published the first book in Spanish Asatru, we have published several books for our members and supporters. We collaborate in conferences and debates as those of the paganism day or soon in a radio program with other pagan groups.
I think our work progresses and is strong, in the Alfrothul, we have been working hard to offer our folk spiritual answers, and I think we are reaching the point of maturity required to consider new challenges.

Our Folkish Vision – David Wolfheart
Some time ago, Alfrothul decided, seeing some attitudes in the Asatru Community to began a campaign and a complaint against the hatred and xenophobia, we believed it was necessary for the good of our faith and tradition. We did this to see that it was necessary to show that our position on this issue is clear. Love your descendants, never hate others. Add to this that we do not like modern Asatru currents cut our faith and tradition to fit their ideas and modern trends, including policies and liberal universalism tend more closer to the monotheistic religions. We believe that there may be differences and there may be debate between Asatru groups to draw conclusions, but some things are not negotiable. Asatru has to be rigid and immovable with things that are timeless, as our values (the 9 noble virtues or the Alfrothul Code, for example), our respect for the Gods and Godeses, our respect to the Nature, and above all, respect for our ancestors from who descended us, this is our heritage and who we are, and this is unchanging. All that does not keep this ,our essence and who we are, is to cut Asatru to mold a more modern ideas, more globalist, or at times, xenophobic extremist or otherwise. This causes great harm to Asatru. In our myths and sagas, we can perceive allegories and values, those values and things that convey our texts must always preserve even collide with the lifestyle of today´s society because they are our base and we must take care not to weaken our essence and our ethics. Our culture, values, and our descent and inheritance can not be molded. Once this is understood, it is normal that they have different points of view, differences and different visions of Asatru in Asatru groups and in our kindreds. Our kindreds may have their personal vision and unique or personal things. From there if we can respectfully discuss among ourselves on staying or in our discussion forums, so between all take different conclusions. We respect any position made with respect , no matter if is more identitary, folkish or traditionalist, we believe in respect and act accordingly. Having said that, we as Asastrú Folkish clear, that we respect and respect other customs and other pagan cults, have called for respect for us. Many times when we feel rooted in our faith, our ancestors, our culture or our heritage and European descent we are attacked by people who do not share our vision of things, and intentionally or not, compare our position with discriminatory attitudes or hatred. This, apart from being totally unfair is totally false, wanting to preserve our tradition, our heritage, ancestral and spiritual legacy of our ancestors from ancient times is not discrimination, is quite the opposite is what we love and love and pride to descend and we want to preserve it in a globalized world in which identities are being lost in every culture. We want to preserve our identity as a people and for us Asatru is not what we choose is who we are. As Europeans we are Asatru is our native religion in pre-Christian times, this was practiced for hundreds of years by our ancestors, we see that every human group has its own such as Native American, African … etc. We also understand that they like to preserve their native roots and we, as Europeans, we like to preserve ours. We believe there is value and respect different cultures, religions and beliefs of each nation and its people that make up the great human mosaic. We are respectful. We do not believe in making the world even with a single “culture” and a single vision of things. We have a clear vision of our tradition and our faith, we believe that this goes beyond something that is chosen for us our faith is something more than that, it is our heritage, our ancestors left us and we believe that the link with them is more than important, and that faith and heritage are linked.
Asatru Ultimately for us it is a modern paganism, but the recreation of native faith, which were our ancestors, the ancient native spiritual expression Indo-European peoples. It is a polytheistic faith who love nature and feel a strong bond with her, to us is not what we choose, that´s where we come from and what we are. Heritage and tradition is not hate.
